Where do I go for groceries?

If you are living in Oadby, ASDA is about 10 minutes walk. For those living near campus, Morrisons is near Freemens Common. There is also a market in town that is open everyday except Sunday that sells fresh fruits and vegetables for really cheap prices.

How do I get home?

Booking flights online, as far in advance as you can is the best way forwards. Some websites worth looking at include: www.travelsupermarket.com and www.skyscanner.net.

As for getting to the airport: East Midlands or Birmingham airports are the closest, easiest and usually cheapest to get to by train or bus. Prices are around £5 one way. However, most London airports are accessible though at an increased cost and duration of journey. Buses leave from St Margaret’s Bus Station.

How can I find my way around Leicester?

maps.google.co.uk is a very useful site to find directions around Leicester, as well as the whole of England. Just enter the postcode of where you are starting from and where you would like to go and a map will show you how to get there.

Where do I put my stuff during the holidays?

As you may know, all students living in catered halls need to move out each vacation. This is especially inconvenient for international students since most of us do not have parents who can pick up our stuff. Some of your friends in self-catered halls may let you keep a few boxes in their room. Halls also have small storage spaces allocated for international students. You could also use a storage company to store your stuff. They can be affordable, convenient and will even provide you with boxes.

How do I set up a bank account?

You will need to take your passport, a letter from uni which has your full name, course name, when you finish, address in Leicester and your date of birth. The school office has a standard format already created for these types of letter: you just need to ask. It takes them a week to organize. Once you organise it with the bank, it will take them around a week to open your account, and another three weeks to send you your card. This means you won’t have access to your money for around a month – so make sure you have enough for this period!
