Phase 2

Life in Phase 2

Phase 2 is the more practical side to medical school. In Phase 2 you go on placements for 7 weeks each in the different areas of medicine. This not only gives you an insight into the different roles in medicine but can also help prepare you for your future career.

The timetable for phase 2 is shown below:

Before junior rotations start (so after PPE) there is a 6 week holiday, so you tend to start junior rotations in the last week of Februrary.

Summer holidays in both Junior rotations and Senior rotations are four weeks long. There are only the four days for easter holiday. We still get bank holidays off too. Also, at the end of each block you finish on a Wednesday, which is a good time to relax before beginning the next block.

Unfortunately, there is no real break inbetween IPE exam and block 1 of senior rotation so after Christmas it is a long haul until summer.

The Junior Summer Project is a two week period where one week is an SSC and the other is a week of simulations and clinical skills. The SSC in senior rotation is also two weeks.

Elective is an eight week period where you spend six weeks on your elective, but having eight weeks allows you to be more flexible with your dates, especially as most people go abroad.

Shadowing is where you are attached to an FY1 Doctor in Leicester and follow them to prepare you for starting your new job in August.

Although all blocks are 7 weeks, some have intro weeks which are in Leicester.

At the end of each block there is a formative assessment, this is usually multiple choice (some are more comprehensive) and will be on a projector, so sometimes can be quite difficult to read, especially if there are images.
